Online Communities - Chat Rooms and Discussion Boards Essay example --

Online Communities - Chat Rooms and Discussion BoardsTo those who shake up never experienced an online community they may seem pointless, a nurture of time or simply childish. However, for those that have expanded beyond the traditional means of communication such as, talking on the teleph matchless or conversing face-to-face, online communities plead a new and exciting means of communication. They offer a chance to meet others, gain advice, voice an opinion, defend an argument, or to simply relax and have a little fun. Ac whopledging both points of view, I decided to explore the world of online communities for myself. For my online community I decided to enter a Yahoo, country music, chat room. by means of Yahoo, there were many different chat rooms you could enter ranging from sports, to current events. However, I choose to enter the country music room beca do I have listened to country music all my life and I thought who I would best relate to those that would be in a country music room. indoors the country music topic there were fourteen different rooms I choose room four because it contained the most great deal 44 active agent members. Therefore, I assumed that it would be the most active. Inside the chat room I was surprised at what I found. The first thing that I observe was the names of the chatters. Each had some sort of country name such as, rodeocowgirl or bullridingcowboy. While looking through the conversations that were occurring I noticed that no one was discussing country music. In fact, the entire time I was in the chat room the topic rarely even appeared. I tried writing a post that verbalize, Does anyone know who sang the song Thunder Rolls? About five minutes later, I received a response that said Garth ... ...meone could become obsessed. Everyone seemed to know each other so well and it seemed as if chatting through this chat room was their way of socializing. Granted these individuals were not gaining an educational aspect from the chat room, however, they were gaining a sense of being part of something. They could express feeling, express viewpoints, vent anger or simply socialize with out being judged. No matter what was said within the chat room participants returned the next day eager to socialize. Chatting online is a huge part of these peoples lives online communities are their source of interaction. Some people value face-to-face communication and some turn to more recent forms of technology. In my opinion your communication selection should fit your own personal needs. You should use whatever source you find most convenient, efficient, and comfortable.

The Strengths and Weaknesses of International Law Essay -- Internation

Even after decades of relatively established pattern for the relations between the rural areas there is still an ambiguity on the issue of state sovereignty. To which extent its violation could be justified? In the study of International Relations there are two major perspectives on the legitimacy of such(prenominal) actions, they are liberal and realist. Arpanet :: essays research papers

The USSR launches Sputnik, the first artificial earth satellite. In the late 1960s theU.S. military was desperately afraid of a nuclear attack from the Soviet Union. TheUnited States formed the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) within the Departmentof Defense to establish a bombproof ne twork to connect military bases. ARPANETs animal(prenominal)network was established in 1969 to enable universities and interrogation organizations toexchange information freely. The first two nodes that formed the ARPANET were UCLA andthe Stanford Research Institute, shortly after the University of Utah was added toARPANET. The mesh Control Protocol (NCP) was initially ingestiond as the ARPANET communications protocol, beginningin 1970. By 1971, a total of 23 hosts at 15 locations were connected to the ARPANET. The quest year, the first international connections occurred, linking the UniversityCollege of London (UK) and the Royal Radar Establishment (Norway) to the ARPANET. The way ARPANET was set up is so that if one of the network links became disrupted byenemy attack, the traffic on it could automatically be rerouted to other links.Fortunately, the Net rarely has come under enemy attack. In the 1970s, ARPA alsosponsored further research into the applications of packet switching technologies. Thisincluded extending packet switching to ships at sea and ground mobile units and the useof radio for packet switching. Ethernet was created during the course of research intothe use of radio for packet switching, and it was found that coaxial cable could supportthe movement of data at extremely fast rates of speed. The development of Ethernet wascrucial to the emersion of local area computer networks. The success of ARPANET made it difficult to manage, particularly with the large andgrowing number of university sites on it. So it was broken into two parts. The two partsconsisted of MILNET, which had the military sites, and the new, smaller ARPANET, whichhad the nonmilitary sites. On January 1,1983, every machine connected to ARPANET had touse TCP/IP. TCP/IP became the core Internet protocol and replaced NCP (old ARPANETlanguage) completely. Thanks to TCP/IP MILNET and ARPANET remained connected through atechnical scheme called IP (Internet Protocol) which enables traffic to be routed fromone network to another as necessary. All the networks connected to the Internet speak IP,so they all can exchange messages. Although there were only two networks at that time, IPwas designed to accept for tens of thousands of networks. An unusual fact about the IPdesign is that every computer on an IP network is just as capable as any(prenominal) other, so any

Hamlet views Essay

The essential component to any Elizabethan tragedy is a protagonist with a grim flaw. In Elizabethan tragedy this is called hamartia. This Latin term translates directly into the word flaw but is usually used to describe an excess of a personality trait virtue or vice. The protagonists fatal flaw pushes the the plot and moveion of the tragedy forward. It is this tragic flaw, which leads to the eventual down radiate of the character, his circumstances, and the misfortune of the drama. In examining the bulk of the literatures protagonists, no other character embodies the essential role of the flawed protagonist like settlement. junctures fatal flaw is his idealism. Only once Hamlet overcomes his idealism is he able to seek his revenge. The climax of the play occurs with Hamlets realization that the world is non as it seems and that he must shrug off his idealistic values and avenge his tyros murder forge 3, scene 4. It is within Act 4, that Hamlet carries out his revenge. The i ssues of love, hate, jealous, incest, power struggle, revenge, and most all important(predicate)ly maturation of the protagonist. These approximations are all present in Hamlet, and were theater elements there were not just enjoyed by Elizabethan audiences but also seemed. In Shakespeares Hamlet, act 4 scene 4, are pivotal within the play. The scene centers around Hamlets speech (lines x-x). Hamlet is left alone on stage and reviews the events that occurred to this point in the play and what he must now do. Hamlet begins How all cause do inform against me, / And spur my dull revenge He clearly knows that he must, now, take his revenge. He asks himself, and the audience, What is a man and continues that a man should be a beast, no more and exhibit god-like reason. Hamlet holds on to his idealism much of the play but in the end, being born and increase as an Elizabethan, he knows he must not be one part wisdom / And ever three parts coward. It is honor that is most important to him. He continues When honours at the stake. How stand I then, / That have a father killd, a mother staind, / Excitements of my reason and my blood, / And let all sleep? Hamlet understands that to be a man he must seek carry out his revenge and he does.Act 3 centers around Hamlet speaking like a jealous lover chastising his girlfriend for sleeping with a different man and making their bed enseamed. The poof is extremely upset and actually asks Hamlet to help her figure out what to do. At this point when Hamlet should have told her to confess, he urges her to stop her relationship with Claudius, not this, by no means, that I bid you do Let the bloat king tempt you again to bed (Act III, sc iv). It is in the moment that Hamlet allows his emotion to dominate over his intellect that Claudius was killed. He is consumed by the thoughts of his fathers demise and is haunted by the knowledge that his fathers mind will not be able to rest until his death is avenged. Hamlet willfully conclud es, My thoughts be bloody or be nothing worth (Act IV sc iv). It is then that Hamlet finally had the ability to suppress his idealistic nature, and do what is right. The murder is not a well planned scheme and occurs in the heat of the moment. Hamlet, after the murder of Claudius never once wavers in his decision. He has done what is right and believes that There is a special providence in the fall of a sparrow (Act V sc ii).Hamlet is able to do anything but take vengeance upon the man who did away with his father and has taken his fathers place with his mother. The pain which should have caused him to take immediate revenge was replaced by pity for himself. It is Hamlets idealistic nature that creates the ultimate theme and driving force behind all the rising action, falling action, and resolution of this tragedy as well as the death of his mother. The way in which Hamlet views his mother, father, and Claudius is finally revealed in Act IV.Once Hamlet is able to be honest about his feelings, he is able to finally seek revenge for his fathers murder. This scene is pivotal to denouement of the play and essential to Hamlets transformation from a boy to man who embodies the important qualities which were cherished and expect by an Elizabethan audiences. In Shakespearean tragedies, the protagonist must die and on the way to his death many people die with him. It is the ultimate act of revenge which appeals to the Elizabethan audience and has made Hamlet a timeless classic.

Funding Hs Sports

State and Federal Aid Brian Alday, Moises Duran, Nuris Finkenthal, and Eric Rossi Grand Canyon University EDA 535- Public take aim Finance November 28, 2012 In the last few years our nation has been faced with enormous budget constraints. Nearly every state has either reduced nurture funding or has maintained funding at a certain level due to the economic downturn of the nation. School districts have needed to happen ways to do more with less, especially in the Sunnyside Unified School District. Most of the funding in our district goes toward technology.Although technology is a big partially of our 21st Century goals, over funding for wiz area has been detrimental for our athletic programs. This poses a problem because athletics gouge be an incentive for students and can encourage them to keep up academically to stay eligible to play. Another important aspect of sports is that it teaches valuable life skills such as adversity, groupwork, integrity, honesty, and responsibility . Sports also get tame spirit for both athletes and non-athletes. For these reasons it is important that we keep high school athletics going for students and schools. To improve athletic funding, as an administrator reaching surface to local businesses, implementing fundraising campaigns, and organizing booster clubhouses would be best to financially support the athletic programs at the school. As an administrator it is important to be aware of the schools demographics as swell as the school communities needs. The Sunnyside Unified School District has a large number of low-income families, single parent families, and families in which parents have to work two or three jobs to support their families.Asking parents to pay more money for their children to participate in sports is out of the question (even though our district has the lowest participation fees in the state). An lane that could help raise money for athletics would be to find local businesses around the community to h elp support athletic programs. High schools and other educational institutes everywhere are seeking corporate sponsorship because of district budget cuts, program budgets cuts, and state funding cuts (King, 2006 Pennington, 2004). As administrator it would be behoove of them to arket their school and raise federations with local businesses to fund athletic programs. Collaboration between corporate businesses and schools may help build new-fangledfound support within the community for its students, its schools, and its programs. With this type of partnership schools can focus on improving academics and athletics, while proving to be beneficial for the local business. Local business can use their donations as tax deductions and ordain demonstrate their invested philanthropic efforts in the community. The daunting reality is that fundraising and schools alone cant always support athletic programs, so schools have turned to un conventional sources, like sponsorship (King, 2006 Lickt eig, 2003). Support within our community is a must in order for our students to succeed. High schools can use corporate sponsorship to keep their athletic programs undirected and for growth. Although coaches are to develop students athletic abilities, they oftentimes turn to players to help them in fundraising efforts.Coaches have to find different ways of fundraising, whether its through car washes, biscuit dough sales or value cards, these fundraising endeavors help their teams pay for better equipment and gear that will give their team a winning edge. In a perfect world each program would be able to self-sustain expenses for their own equipment, but unfortunately that is not the case for the staff at Desert View. The traditional way of using capital funds is for each sport receives capital monies every 3 years. This is not nearly enough to sustain yearly tourney fees, uniforms, equipment and out of town trips to play other elite teams in the state. Fundraising is not an easy task especially if the players and parents do not buy into what the coach is trying to do. As an administrator a plan would be proposed for all athletic teams to fundraise together, this would eliminate competition between athletic teams within one school site and there would be less conflict of teams selling the same items for their teams. Also all monies would be deposited into one athletic account, which is then distributed evenly to all athletic programs. All athletic programs would be mandated to attend and participate in all fundraising events. To help plan and carry out these events, a Jag Booster club would be created and comprised of parents from each sports team. The booster club would meet once or twice a month to go over budget plans, create new fundraising ideas, set schedules for different teams to host the snack bar for up-coming athletic events, etc.The Jag Booster club would help alleviate all the pressures from the coach and athletic film director by taking on these f undraising roles. The booster club would also oversee any special requests by coaches who ask for more funds for certain equipment and/or for trips. The ultimate decisions will be based upon the discretion of booster club to what will be in the best interest for the entire athletic program. not only will it get more parental involvement within our schools, but it will also bring our sports programs together to build one greens goal of raising funds for all of the athletics. In conclusion, though our school district is facing many budgetary constraints, implementing local business sponsorships, creating fundraising campaigns, and building an overall team booster club, our athletic programs will be able to become more effective in the way we raise funds for not only one program, but all programs, thus allowing coaches to concentrate on coaching, students to concentrate on being student-athletes and achieving excellenceReferences Pennington, B. Succubus on Top CHAPTER 14

I wasnt prepared for Dana to answer Bastiens door the next day.Oh my God, I aspect. He at last slept with her.The truth turned bring out to be far less exciting. Bastien as Mitch was covered up to his elbows in flour, his hands busily kneading a medium-sized lump of dough.Hey brindled Cat, he express upon witnessing me and my startled expression. Danas coning me to bake bread.Wow, I said. Really, in that location was no other way to respond to a statement equal that.I had personally seen Bastien make bread in far more(prenominal) primitive conditions, tho when he apparently believed the old teacher-student routine was exhalation to surface the way to Danas bed for him now. It did have its merits, of course. Human nature ilkd showing superiority in areas of expertise, and a teaching relationship provided lots of alone sentence to hither. I suspected that even with that tactic, Dana might still be out of reach, but hey, maybe it was worth a shot. The fact that she act ually do eon for this struck me as odd. I figured shed be too busy bombing abortion clinics and handing out school uniforms.Speaking of alone time, I unbalanced that Id blundered into some meaningful opportunity for the incubus. I met his eyes.I weed come back later if its a bad time, I told him.No, no. Danas got to go to a meeting soon. You can keep me company once this babys in the oven. His tone was genuine. Hed probably already exhausted efforts to commove her to stay.Un voiced in her presence, I sit down on one of the stools by the counter and sipped the white-chocolate mocha Id picked up on my way over. Dana sat down beside me. I resisted the urge to move away. Glancing at his kitchen table, I saw stacks of CPFV pamphlets and brochures. Why the interest in cooking? I asked blandly when no one said anything.A bachelor cant live on fast food and frozen dinners forever, huh? He turned up the dial on his smile. And hey, Im always open to unsanded experiences. Next time shes g oing to teach me to make creme brulee.I grunted. You learn to makecreme brulee, and I might have to move in.Dana turned to me, elegantly crossing her legs, showing that oh-so-wholesome slip obtained during the infamous shopping trip. Id give up on slips a while ago. They just delayed the main event. I could show you too.Hell no. Id gotten roped into yard work by engage a similar vein of conversation with Jody. No more domestic vices for me. Besides, I knew Bastien wouldnt welcome my presence. Thanks, but Ill just leave it to Mitch. Hes the brilliant one in this family anyway.Bastien gave the bread a final pat. Okay, now what? like a shot we put it in the pan.She walked over to show him. As she did, he leaned in extra close, supposedly to larn a better look. He even reached out his hand to brush hers, following her motions as they transferred the bread. Perhaps it would have been polite to look away, but there was nothing overtly romantic going on, and besides, I tangle a professi onal interest in the matter. Histechniquewas good, I had to admit. Very subtle. Nothing that could be misconstrued as more than a polite accident. Yet, I saw Dana just as subtly stiffen and step away once the bread was in its pan.Now you just let it rise, she said, in a somewhat cooler tone. thus it goes in the oven.Interesting. She hadnt liked Bastiens proximity. That didnt bode well for him. I didnt think he noticed, however.I would have expected her to leave, but she sat down next to me again. I could never think of anything interesting to hypothecate some her she unnerved me too much. So I let the two of them talk, answering solo when spoken to and otherwise letting Bastien run the show. He positively glowed. Dana tried to draw me in a number of times, again asking me things about my life I really didnt expect to answer. When she finally rose to go, she commented, Im discharge to a board meeting to contrive our upcoming rally against gay marriage. You two should join us when it happens.Absolutely, said Bastien, who probably would have agreed to an anti-incubus rally at this point. She glanced over at me. My language suddenly felt thick, words again eluding me. ar you for gay marriage? she asked with surprise. I thought when we talked about this at the mall, you had implied you were more in regard of helping them see the error of their ways.Christ. Had we discussed this on the mall trip? I couldnt remember. The only thing I recalled clearly was the lingerie debacle.I wanted to consider right then that I didnt think homosexuality was a choice for all people, nor did I believe there should be laws about who people loved. Fortunately, my potency switch was fully operational. That, combined with Bastiens heavy gaze, made me redirect my answer and evade the question. Id love to go to the rally, I said flatly. Itll depend on my schedule. She smiled thinly, made a few parting remarks, and then left.I exhaled. Sorry about that, Bas. I nearly choked up on you.Not a problem. You recovered. Besides, I think things are turning around. I thought of it the last time she and Jody were over. This cooking thing is going to be what does it. He peered into the oven at his now-baking bread in the beginning sitting at the kitchen table happily. Cant you see it? Well be like, I dont know, baking a cake together, and Ill say, Why Dana, you have chocolate frosting on your cheek. Then shell say, Will you get it off for me? Then I will, only Ill lick it off Okay, just stop now, please. I get the picture. I really dont want to hear about you two rolling around in cake batter.Youll have to once its on the evening news.I smiled, relieved to see him so cheered up after our last encounter. I couldnt bring myself to split up him I didnt think the cooking lessons were making Dana quite as hot and heavy as he would have liked. If we were going to save Bastien from demonic wrath, I believed we needed a better understanding of what if anything turned that woman on. And I had the distasteful tactile sensation that I would be a better agent for that particular piece of reconnaissance than he would be. One more thing to add to my count. So whats new with you?Oh, the usual. Another awkward physical encounter with Seth. Not nearly as big a deal as the last one, but still.Bastien shrugged. Alas for finite weakness.Dana left my mind as my own personal relations came to the fore summit. Thats the thing. Everyones been going on and on about how he wouldnt be able to handle our relationship, but its not his weakness thats the problem. Its me. Im the faulty piece here. Seths through with(p) exactly what hes supposed to. He handles every horrible thing I tell him about myself, and he never does anything to cross the sexual line. His one moment of weakness was when I initiated things. Hes perfect.Nobodys perfect, Fleur .If theres anything I feel certain of in this world, its that. Even the angels themselves are imperfect.I thought about Carter s chain-smoking and penchant for hard liquor. Thats for damned sure. yet Seth comes pretty close. At least as deadlys go. Whereas meI dont know. I feel so useless in our relationship. He stood up and drew me to him. What is this, your day to feel melodramatic and depressed? Look. No way are you useless not if youve been with him this long. Hes in it for more than sex. Hes in it for you. For that delightful wit and charm that manages to cheer even grumpy bastards like me up. What I cant figure out is what the hell youre getting out of it.Plenty, I said, thinking of Seths humor and intelligence, his serious and steady nature. And I suppose hes happy with what hes got, but he must still, you know, feel unfulfilled. Hes a man, right? I see him looking at me sometimes, and I know what hes thinkingwhat he wants. I thought about my toe-teasing. I dont think I really make it easy on him either. I flirt without thinking about it. I wish I could give him, I dont know, something. Something nonlethal to reward his amazing celibate intensity and overall amazingness with everything thats happened so far. Nonlethals going to be hard for you. Youre the ultimate look-dont-touch girl.My slumping head shot up. Thats it.Whats it?Looking without touch modality. Youre going to help me. I felt my natural optimism and aught seizing me as I flashed the incubus a saucy grin. Youre going to be my photographer. His eyebrows rose, but I think he already knew where I was going with this. And pray tell, what will I be photographing, my dear?Me. In a bevy of alluring poses and skimpy underwear. Or nothing at all. Well do a whole spread. His smile twitched at the word spread. And you think this will help him? All itll do is drive him into the bathroom alone for ten hours.Hey, he can do whatever he wants with them, but its a great idea. Itll be a treat. A safe way of having me without having me. I poked the incubus in the arm. Youll help, wont you? Youre the only person I trust to take th ese.Of course Ill help you. Whyd you even ask?I sighed happily, like a great load had been taken off of me. Of course, even if this is good for Seth, it doesnt solve the problem of me being a weak-willed strumpet. Ill still be thinking about him all the time. Still wondering what itd be like to touch really touch him. Still breaking down with him in moments of weakness. I sighed again, this time with frustration. Theres no helping me, I guess. Pictures of him wont do it. Hey, said Bastien, touching my chin. Smile again. Youll figure out something. And if not, I promise you I will. The brother you never had, remember? Were here for each other, n,est-ce pas ?I smiled and leaned my head against his chest. Oui.We stayed like that for a few pleasant minutes until I remembered far less sentimental issues. I sat up.Oh, hey, you have got to check something out.I picked up my purse and pulled out the bag of crystals Alec had given me. Bastien recoiled when I held them out to him. What the hell are those?Thats the million-dollar question. These are whats causing my friend at the bookstore to act so weird.Regaining his composure, he leaned in to look closer but wouldnt touch the bag. Theyre strange, he said slowly. They give off somethingLike an immortal signature, I agreed. But Ive never felt an inanimate object that did this. Its not the same as an enchantment. It doesnt feel bad exactlyjust not right.I asked Seth about it. Mortals dont feel anything, only us. Ever come across anything like this? No, but then Im the novice next to you, right?I slid the crystals back into my purse, to the relief of both of us, and then explained what Alec had said about mixing them in liquid.Curiouser and curiouser, mused Bastien. Not like any drug I know, but its not giving off any legitimate potion vibraharp either. If you want to know what this is, Fleur ,youre going to have to break out the big guns.I knew he was right. We hung out together a while longer, moving on to less weird s ubjects. The bread smelled so good cooking that there was no way I could leave until Id tried a piece. Upon tasting it, I decided that whatever her other faults, Dana knew what she was doing with food. I ended up getting away with a good half loaf of the bread and then operate back downtown to find the big guns.I got a lucky break, and Jerome actually answered his cell phone and gave me his location. Even if he hadnt, it would have been on my list of places to try. The Cellar was an old, dark pub in Pioneer Square, Seattles historic district. You had to take a flight of stairs down to get to the Cellar, and I always had the judgement the place wouldnt survive the Northwests next big earthquake. The Cellar was one of Jerome and Carters favorite haunts.I found them both there in their usual corner. The place was dark, as always, and was starting to pick up a little with happy-hour traffic. Angel and demon watched me enter with their typically amused expressions, both having sensed m e before I clean-cut the door. Jerome always gave the impression over the phone that I was taking up his time, but neither seemed particularly busy now. I ordered a gimlet at the bar, smiling at the two guys who made conversation while I waited, and then moved on to join the dynamic duo.A working(a) lunch? I asked, inclining my head at the empty shot glasses in front of them. The two practically sat side by side, so the only other chair was across from them, like I was at an interview.Carter picked up one of the empty glasses and offered me a mock toast. I clinked my glass with his. Dont question the divine workings of the universe, Daughter of Lilith. The Lords work is never done, added Jerome solemnly. They both seemed a little loopy, but I wasnt fooled. Higher immortals like angels and demons could throw their levels of intoxication. The other lesser immortals and I had said a number of stupid things in front of them when we thought either Jerome or Carter had been wasted. The ir eyes held a discriminating scrutiny even now that told me they were both curious about why Id sought out my supervisor in the middle of the day.Been to see the incubus? Jerome asked a moment later.I nodded. He thinks hes making progress.Thinks? asked the demon, raising one eyebrow. I wondered if John Cusack could actually do that. Is there a doubt?I didnt say that. But you also didnt say that he is making progress.A slip of the tongue. I misspoke. You dont misspeak often, Georgie. And Ive come to actually believe you do know something about seduction after all. And maybe even human nature.Something?Carter laughed at my incredulous tone. So, continued Jerome, in your expert opinion, is your friend going to be able to do this or not?I was about to say of course, but knew Carter would recognize the lie. Hell, even Jerome probably would. I dont know. Shes hard to read. Very strange woman. I pursed my lips, thinking. If anyone is capable of seducing her, though, itll be him. With my he lp. I hesitated before adding, You know about the Barton thing, dont you?Of course. Very foolish on Bastiens part.I guess. I didnt want to slam one of my best friends in this company. But its not like our side is really known for impulse control. And it seems kind of stupid for Barton to get so worked up over a woman who sleeps around all the time anyway. Whats one more person, immortal or not?Because the immortal meant something, said Carter seriously. You of all people should recognize the nuances here. What would Seth think if you slept with me?Are you offering? I turned to Jerome, feigning excitement. I get to retire if I bag an angel, right? Full pension and everything?Depends on the angel, yawned Jerome.Carter kept his content smile, unfazed by jokes about his celibacy or immortal standing. You know what I mean. Theres a difference between business and choice.I nodded. I did know what he meant, and he was right being with Seth made me especially cognizant of the subtleties. You know, I didnt come here to discuss this, I told them. Both had the tendency to address me off topic into subjects I didnt want to explore.Well, do enlighten us then, said the archdemon indulgently. Im dying to know what would draw you away from suburban conspiracy and mortal intrigue in the middle of the day.Actually, it involves mortal intrigue.I gave them a debriefing on the Doug situation. Jerome maintained his perpetual look of disinterest. Carter almost did, but snide or not, he was still an angel, and I saw compassion flicker in his eyes as I spoke. He couldnt help it.So, I finally managed to get Alec to give me the stuff, and now I need to know what it is. You two seemed like my best shots at identification. Jeromes disinterest turned to astonishment. This is what weve been reduced to? Drug identification? Do we look like the DEA?Carter stretched lazily. Remember the good old days when succubi used to want our help defending them from nephilim and other lethal creatures? This is a sign of the times, I tell you. I let them have a good laugh at my expense, forcing myself to stay calm and not say something that would get me into trouble. Are you guys done? I asked a minute later. Because Id really like to get moving on this. Are you going to share some of it with us if we can tell you what it is? asked Jerome.Rolling my eyes, I reached into my purse. With a flourish, I tossed the little bag out onto the table so it slid across the surface and came to rest just in front of both of them.Their smiles disappeared. They stared at the bag for a moment and then in almost perfect synchronization looked at each other and back to me.When Carter spoke, he was amused, but grimly amused. Maybe I shouldnt have been so quick to rule out supernatural monsters after all. How, exclaimed Jerome, nostrils flaring, do you always manage to get yourself mixed up in the middle of this shit?I looked back and forth between the two of them. What? What is it?This, Georgina, announ ced Carter, tapping the bag with his finger, is the Food of the Gods.

Psychological Factors Affecting Consumer Behavior

It has been stated that marketing management rests upon some conception or other of how consumers be incur (Foxall 2001). I will proceed to demonstrate, beginning with an overview of consumer appearance as it relates to the psychological factors that cause one to comply with a prone request, through to an examination of the various trends in marketing which are reflective of consumers ever-changing demands as they respond to world events and societal evolution, why it is vital that marketers understand and evaluate consumer manner. I will also demonstrate, through the use of exemplars, how various organizations are employing specific strategies based upon their understanding of consumer behavior to produce record growth and profitability in the marketplace.Psychological Factors Affecting Consumer BehaviorAs one affable psychologist has termed the weapons of influence, there appear to be certain driving forces in human nature, or automatic psychological triggers, that propel ind ividuals to respond in predictable ship course to wedded requests (Cialdini 1993, p.3).One much(prenominal) force is the principle of Reciprocation, whereby one feels obligated to return a favor that has been provided him (Cialdini 1993, p.17). This principle is most clearly evidenced by the consumers natural tendency to buy a product from someone after he has been extended a kindness or favor from him. It has been demonstrated that this psychological principle of the pressure to return a favor with a favor is so strong, that it even surpasses the need to like the individual extending the favor (Cialdini 1993, p.21).One example of the rule of reciprocation at work has been evidenced by the wildly successful marketing strategy of the Hare Krishna Society, an eastern religious sect know for its solicitation of funds from passersby in public places (Cialdini 1993, p.22). Having been mostly unsuccessful at raising funds through traditional methods of chanting on the streets while be gging for bribes, the group devised a brilliant strategy that essentially invoked the principles of reciprocation (Cialdini 1993, p.22). As an individual would pass by, a Society member, rather than bear for a donation initially, would hand the unsuspecting person a flower, offering it as a free gift from the Society and not accepting its return under all circumstances. Only then would the Society member ask for a donation (Cialdini 1993, p.22).The response was overwhelming, and a testament to the extraordinary power of reciprocation. The individual, aware that he had been given a gift and feeling the pressure to reciprocate, was often compelled to respond with a donation (Cialdini 1993, p.24). some other powerful psychological principle in a marketers arsenal of tools is the commitment and consistency factor (Cialdini 1993, p. 37). It has been discovered that people feel a very powerful drive to be consistent once they have move themselves to something (Cialdini 1993, p. 37).An example of this principle at play is witnessed through the offering of testimonial contests by such big-name companies as Proctor & Gamble and General Foods (Cialdini 1993, p.39). In these contests, the companies ask participants to write short essays, often for large prizes, which include praise for the companies products. Usually no purchase is required what is more important is that by forcing potential customers to record, in writing, praise for the companys product, the company relies on the psychological drive of the individual to believe what he has written (Cialdini 1993, p 40).Apart from the psychological triggers that persuade individuals to comply with given requests, marketers must seek to understand the equally intriguing psychological processes at work in the unconscious mind that cause consumers to study one token course of action, or product, over another (Zaltman 2003, p.53). One example of such an unconscious process can be seen in the overwhelming tendency of customers to choose a product offered for $9.99 over an identical one offered for $10.00 (Zaltman 2003, p64).Consumer Need Practicality Or Emotionality? It has been stated that, contrary to popular belief, people do not so much buy things they dont need, but that the need is often based more upon emotions and feelings than it is upon concrete physical necessity (Danziger 2004, p.1).Though the gross domestic product in the United States has largely been generated by consumer spending since 1929-a full 60 to 70 percent of it- the way consumers generally spend their money has changed significantly over the past 70 years (Danziger 2004, p.3). It is claimed that, today, over 40 percent of consumer spending is discretionary based on wants, not needs (Danziger 2004, p.4).Changing Trends And Their Affect On The MarketplaceAnother important factor in predicting consumer behavior involves changing trends in the marketplace. Marketers must be ever vigilant to customers changing needs as society evolves and refreshing events cause consumers wants and needs to adjust accordingly.A clear example of this is witnessed by the f propagately recent change in menu selections offered by fast-food chains such as McDonalds and Burger King. Responding to a concern over the rising tide of obesity in the U.S. and around the world and consumers increasing want to maintain healthier lifestyles, such fast-food conglomerates have been adding healthier choices to their menu selections which includes salads, apple slices instead of French fries, and so on (Plunkett Research 2005).Another example of a change in consumer behavior was reflected in consumers response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The airline industry, facing huge setbacks as a result of consumers new reluctance to travel by air for fear of another terrorist attack, was forced to undergo massive restructurings to accommodate the new environment imposed upon them (Plunkett Research 2005). Consumers, wishing to reconc ile their fears and need to reduce expenditures with the desire to continue enjoying and experiencing life as usual, were searching for ways-and bargains- to enable them to do this. Hence, there began a shift in the airline industry away from luxury to economy, as discount airlines began setting the new standard for air travel by luring passengers with price, not perks (Plunkett Research 2005).With Southwest Airlines and JetBlue leading the pack, these airlines have achieved success and profitability responding to consumers changed needs, in the main by cutting maintenance, operating and labor costs, such as by offering a single-plane platform and an open-seating policy (Plunkett Research 2005).In the meantime, of course, as full-service airlines have struggled to compete with the burgeoning success of the discount model, some, like Delta, have begun developing their own low-cost models, which manage to keep costs down by hiring younger passage crews.Another shining example of mar keters need to understand and predict consumer behavior comes in the form of the relatively recent phenomenon of online delivery and piracy-or theft-of copyrighted music and idiot box files ((Plunkett Research 2005). Forced to adapt to this trend following a 2002-2003 decline in music revenues, music companies have been seeking ways to safeguard their files from sinful download and distribution, as well as to capitalize on the internet craze by finding methods by which to distribute their files through legal bureau via the internet (Plunkett Research 2005).Responding to this need, iTunes Music Store, a digital service provided by Apple Computer, Inc.,was launched in 2003, and it offers music files for download over the internet (Plunkett Research 2005).On a different front, automobile manufacturers have been responding to consumers rising concern over escalating gas prices, which reached a record-high in September 2005 of $3.01 per gallon (Plunkett Research 2005). After woefulne ss huge losses on their lines of minivans, pickups and sport utility vehicles (SUVs), the big three U.S. manufacturers, Ford, GM and Chrysler, are focusing on raising fuel efficiency for these bigger models (Plunkett Research 2005).In addition, as foreign car companies like Toyota, Honda, and BMW have continued to steal sales away from U.S. automobile manufacturers, partially due to a reputation for producing higher quality cars, these American manufacturers have been responding by designing new product lines, such as the hugely successful Chysler 300C, with its eye-catching cook and boxy, elegant design (Plunkett Research 2005).In sum, whether responding to a consumers instinctual drives, which dictate that he or she will likely react in a certain way to a given stimulus, or evaluating the marketplace and consumer behavior based on world events and changing needs, marketing management does indeed rest on a conception of how consumers will behave, now and in the future.

Law & Ethics Essay

BB General PartnershipDracca is able to seek recover from Silva Gray privately on the judgment for BB union because the partnership has non been incorporated. In a general partnership each individual can be fulfilld for the full amount of the business debt. The partners cannot seduce personal interest within the partnership (Bagley & Savage, 2009 p. 729). If one partner incurs all of the debt, they can then sue the other partners for their parts of the debt. Within a peculiar(a) Liability Partnership these three items would take issue from the general partnership. 1. Limited partners do not play an active role in the business2. Limited partners are not personally liable3. Limited partners face slightly different tax rules (NOLO) BB is not a formalized company under the laws of corporation and taxation, so in turn each individual can be held liable for the debt legally. However, Dracca should not have gone after Ms. Grey solely on a tip of her wealth.Business Judgment shapeThe Business Judgment Rule states that as long as the board members have acted in good assent and meet the basic standards, there should not be a fear of prosecution when making decisions (Bagley & Savage, 2009 p. 801). To insure that the board of directors did not fault their obligation of care and the Business Judgment Rule several(prenominal) items must be analyzed.1. Were the directors interested in the transaction?2. Did the directors act in good faith? 3. Did the directors act in a manner that cannot be attributed to a rational purpose? 4. Did the directors reach the decision by a negligent process? (Bagley & Savage, 2009 p.801). The board must also consider their duty of care and duty of loyalty. Duty of care requires people involved in the company to make informed and reasonable decisions for the business. Duty of loyalty requires employees to act in good faith and in good interest of the company (Bagley & Savage, 2009 p. 799).In the case of Dracca vs. BB, the board did not a ct in good duty of care, duty of loyalty or use the Business Judgment Rule appropriately. The overall concept to obtain the debt from BB was an action of duty or care and loyalty to the company. However, the way the board of directors went astir(predicate) the retrieval of the debt was not the best method. By pursuing Ms. Gray off a tip the fund backfired and the company incurred a lot of fees that might not of occurred if the pursue was planned correctly. The process of pursuing the money was neglected, fault number three in the Business Judgment rule.Employment DiscriminationThe accounting tutor for Dracca overseeing the BB account, Martin Long had his pay and responsibilities decreased by Accounting Director Mary smith. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) was developed to help employees against discrimination of age, sex, race, gender, field origin, disability, and religion (Bagley & Savage, 2009 p.466). In Martin Longs case he left the company because Ms. Smit hs visual and vocal opinions. The opinions turned into harassment and last Long left the Firm. By vocalizing and placing visual signs Ms. Smith was creating a harsh work environment for employees.Long will be able to sue Dracca for employment discrimination and argue constructive discharge because there must be evidence of unpleasant working condition that it forces the employee to resign and the employer has not taken care of the complaint within 15 days of being informed of the issues. The harassment must be worse than act VII (Runkel, n.d.). Dracca is responsible for Ms. Smiths actions/discrimination against Long. Kate was fired after reporting to the EEOC the harassment from Ms. Smith. Kate should not of been fired for reporting the discrimination. Due to Draccas action upon firing Kate, the company seems to esteem of Ms. Smiths actions. The EEOC Compliance Manual states that the person filing the complaint is protected against retaliation by a respondent for participating i n the statutory complaint proceedings even if that complaint involved a different covered entity (Igasaki, 1998).From the EEOC, Dracca would be held liable for Hernandezs actions within the court system. Hernandez violated the EEOC Title VII discriminatory actions. The Title VII makes two theories clear to businesses. 1. The theory of disparate treatment and 2. The theory of disparate impact. Disparate treatment means that the plaintiff has to splay that the employer intentionally discriminated against him/her denying a benefit of employment (Bagley & Savage, 2009 p.471). Disparate impact is when employers make employment decisions based on selection, making employers complete test and evaluations.BFOQ stands for Bona Fide occupational that an employer must prove that the type of person is not able to perform the job position. In this case, women with children were hired in order to sell the product. Dracca would have to prove that men were not able to perform the job. The BFOQ can not be used as a defense when there is a preferred gender within the company. The pursual also apply. Usually BFOQ is not based on color and gender will not qualify when the 1. Assumptions of the comparative employment characteristics of women in general, 2. Stereotyped characteristics of the sexes, and 3. The preferences of coworkers, employers or customers for one gender or the other (Bagley & Savage, 2009 p. 485).ConclusionAfter reviewing the case, I recommend the following1. Dracca hire new board members with a focus on the business, and not a focus on money. The Board of Directors should be compiled of people that are business savvy and care about the firm and about the financials in a legal and ethical manner. By the Board leaning on a tip and not fact, the business incurred a lot of debt that could have been spend somewhere else within the firm. 2. Dracca should have a firmer hiring process where the prospects are asked to observe and manage for a day, or write out a list o f goals, or how to hire people for certain positions. This could show some speculation to discrimination. Also, Dracca should be stricter on company policy regarding religion, politics, and harassment. If need be the company can have classes on what is and is not harassment within the workplace. In this case, it seems that Dracca turned a blind eye on Mr. Long.ReferencesBagley, Savage (2009 Feb. 5). Attitudes Towards War in A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway Essay

Ernest Hemingway was one of the most influential writers of the Modern period. After being rejected from the army, Hemingway entered the state of war in 1917 as an ambulance driver on the Italian front. Hemingways relationship with the war could have been his reason for writing his novel A adieu to Arms. A Farewell to Arms takes place in Italy in World War I. The novel tells of the conflicts of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front, Frederick Henry, and his difficulties with war, love and death. In this feature novel, Hemingway expresses several different attitudes towards war through the characters Frederick Henry, Lieutenant Rinaldi, and Gino.World War I has no extreme effect on Frederick Henry. He feels as though it is not his war to fight since his country has very little to do with it. Henry does not even realize the seriousness of the war until it takes its cost on him. Frederick Henry mentions, Well, I knew I would not be killed. Not in this war. It did not ha ve anything to do with me. It seemed no more dangerous to me than war in the movies (37 ch. 7). The war is no more than another adventure to Frederick Henry. It seems he is in the war just to have something to do. Catherine says to Henry Why did you join up with the Italians? I was in Italy, I said, and I spoke Italian (22 ch. 5). Clearly Henry does not care much for the war. He feels uncomfortable with the passion others feel for it, such as Gino, and Henry exemplifies this when he mentions, I was always embarrassed by the words sacred, glorious, sacrifice and the expression in abortive (184 ch. 27). He goes on to say, I had seen zilch sacred, and the things that were glorious had no glory (185 ch. 27).Lieutenant Rinaldis outlook on the war is depressing, and he feels as thought he war has torn his full world apart. Rinaldi used to the happy go lucky man who always had a couple of drinks and a good time until the war truly takes its toll on him. The war is killing me. I am very depressed by it (167 ch. 25). He is telling this to Frederick Henry after a long separation period when Henry was in the hospital. Rinaldi has clearly changed and Henry notices right away. Un resembling Henry, Lieutenant Rinaldi seemsto get a sense of belonging from the war, and he felt like he was needed as a talented surgeon. As soon as Rinaldi is no long-term needed for operating anymore, he no longer feels he is needed in the war, and his place in society becomes unclear. Rinaldi comments to Henry, I dont operate now and I feel like hell. This is a terrible war baby. You believe me when I say it (167 ch. 25).Gino is the man who shows Henry around Gozoria after Henrys return from Milan. Gino thinks of the war as a big opportunity to show loyalty for his country. All he wants to do is make a difference in the army, and he almost refuses to admit to the rocky realities of war. Gino believes that all great acts are done strictly out of the goodness in peoples hearts and are done only to be loyal patriots. Gino says to Henry, We wont talk about losing. There is enough talk about losing. What has been done this summer cannot have been done in vain (184 ch. 27). Gino clearly thinks all men should be as patriot as he is, and does not seem to understand those who are not. Henry realizes this and respects Ginos opinions and beliefs. Gino was a patriot, so he said things that separated us sometimes, but he was also a fine boy and I understood his being a patriot. He was born one (185 ch. 27).Frederick Henry, Lieutenant Rinaldi, and Gino are very different characters with very different attitudes towards the war in the novel A Farewell to Arms. Hemingway uses his unique style to show the different opinions through his Hemingway heroes. All of these characters have different views on war, and this shows Hemingways respect for all of these opinions.

Love

I start learnt that there argon two divergent attitudes towards turn in I throw off selected iv poetrys that consider this reduce and show the poets authorized thoughts on turn in. ii of my texts, Leaving Prince Charming Behind, writ decennary by Karol Mila and Advice to a toss out have sexr, pen by Fleer Dock, both take c atomic number 18 at the theme of sleep togethermaking and chivalric relationships in a contradict and sort of a cast down manner. Whereas, the other two texts deal with both the poets sweet, happy and much than pragmatic attitude towards the power of dependable hunch forward life. To the young woman who stood beside me at the check extinct predict ofWhitewalls in Hamilton on Tues twenty-four hour period, write by Glenn Colophon and This is sleep together, indite by Karol Mila both deal with the positive aspects of go to sleep and the Journey of fargon and what it meaner to them. The two texts Leaving Prince Charming Behind, writte n by Karol Mila and Advice to a discarded Lover, written by Fleer Dock. looking for at the theme of live d unmatchable two similar slipway. The connection amongst the texts is the poets stating their sad and invalidating mental capacity on chicane, certain proficiencys such as fictions help to demonstrate and instance the visual form of both poets similar negative comprehensions of love and relationships. In the poem, Leaving Prince Charming Behind relating to fairy floors clarified that she did non urgency to be a princess any much than. By utilise a illustration the poem always referred to the fairy tosh characters. The technique was effective in vie provideg the connection amongst the two texts, as the fairy report characters provide stereotypes and presumed fareledge. So we assume what is passing play to happen. However Mila proves our assumption wrong by presentation the chimerical side of individually event or character. As a reader we know fight back as a princess in a tower. Mila modifies this motion picture by describing her long hair as shorn. The architect of isolation elates to Repulse feeling helpless. She has utilise this to show that she treasured to escape from him and that she did non love him anymore. The metaphor helps to show the reader, the poets negative outlook and liking of what love is, which is not fairy tale is, she describes it to be the accomplished opposite. This then connects with my sulphur text, Advice to a discarded lover, written by Fleer Dock, as she also uses techniques such as metaphors in her poem to illustrate her negative idea of what love is due to a outgoing relationship.Like the technique discussed previously, metaphors give us a terminate image of what love is finished the poets respective. The verbs that were signifi enkindlet in enhancing the metaphor, that she used to describe the relationship, Wriggling, munching, crawling and creeping, all relate to someones initial re ply on finding a specially gross bug. His fat, moist warm-skin makes him sound revolting, at this stage she can merely be revolted by his actions as she would an insect. The verbs enhance the metaphor as it helps you to see the poet is literally stating that her ex-partner is a disgusting maggoty unfounded bird. This is manifest when she says, In you I see maggots close to the surface so it is clear hat she finds him quite unbearable. in that locationfore this increase metaphor is a sub- connection symbolisms and illustrates the author thoughts on love which therefore This is the same in the texts, This is love written by Karol Mila and To the female child who stood beside me at Whitewalls bookstore in Hamilton on Tuesday, written by Glenn Calhoun. The poets also stockpile their perception of love, done a positive, happy and more realistic point of view as they are more world(a) not skillful focusing on a past relationship, these poets are not referring to fairy tale illu sions, We were living he fairy tale, or describing their past relationships to be a dead maggoty valueless bird, a dead bird, not only dead, not only fallen, but all-inclusive of maggots, they are tell what love generally meaner to them, and they have logic behind this belief therefore their vantage point seems to be more realistic.Together the poets have shown that love is a demonstrate with several different stages, these stages will not be ideal if the relationship is not cared for and nurtured, to create a happy and profound relationship which is intelligibly shown in the texts. whence I believe this shows the realism of each ext compared to the refinement two, also showing their connection. In the poem This is love, written by Karol Mila, she uses gardening to relate to love, and relationships between lovers Mila introduces a metaphor by art her thoughts, the roots which have been nurtured and improve over the years to reach her appreciation of love. The image is d eveloped as she watches grand hands cook custodial place a new workings into the bucket. The tending process of the thoughts and the new seeds are described in detail. Love is the pruning and the watering in the seventh stanza shows that Mila realizes that love is like a plant that need to be rated tenderly, pruned back and watered on a regular keister to maintain the relationship, this also supports the idea of showing that the poet believes that love is a Journey, and there are many stages in a relationship, but to have a strong healthy and long relationship, it needs to be nurtured and cared for.So this shows Mila expressing her perception of what she thinks love is, in this case her outlook to me seems to be quite bright, realistic and peaceful. This then connects with my last text, To the girl who stood beside me at the checkout counter at Whitewalls in Hamilton on Tuesday, written by Glenn Colophon. Again the poet writes his true thought on what he believes love is which also seems to be quite loving and sweet. This is evident when the poet goes through all the things of what he believes true love is centered around, for manakin We kissed, We married, We built a house beside a lake, and We grew fat and happy together. All of these are happy things that symbolism what the poets initial thoughts and ideas of what he personally believes love is. They also show that this poet believes that love and cosmos in a relationship has several stages, which get more and more significant the longer oh persist in with one person, and takes sentence to get to where you may want to be in a relationship.I believe this is a very ratiocinative and positive viewpoint on love, erst again showing the connections with the previous text. I think that the idea of love can be visualised in a number of ways depending on past experiences, which may alter your thoughts and your definition of what love meaner to not Just poetry, was everlastingly touristed but is adequa te more and more popular in todays society, as on a day to day basis we are surrounded by stereotypes of what love is supposed to be like.LOVEMakes Perfect In the essay Expertise Dissected, Daniel J. Based on y life experience and the book I read, I think his points are totally decry. All in all, practice is the most important foundation for success. People need to practice if they want to achieve the inspiration they have wished. Taking Vivian, who took same COCCIDS class with me, as an example, she is a student majoring in philo sophy. And she is extremely expert and always has many unique thoughts. However, we shared the same situation where we both failed COCCIDS for five times. Now, she realized that she could not afford another failure in COCCIDS , otherwise she would be kicked out from SCUDS. So she decided to practice more, which actually led to a reward. At the end of that quarter, she finally passed the snuff it exam. However, I failed again since I did not study hard enough. The contradiction from Vivian and me shows that Levitys points are totally correct that people can not get a significant achievement without practice.Levities mentions that even one is furnish with superior talent, he also has to practice since practice makes per fect, which I think is totally right. After day and day training, he was able to help the squad win championship for six times and win himself the most valued player for five times. Just as authors mentioned, talent is a gift from God, however practice makes this gift being discovered more deeply. There are many evidence showing that people are easily to fail if they s extend practice, no matter how talented they are. Also, there were lots of negative reports about his fife after that winning and tally to these reports, he smoked weed and drank almost everyday. From this example, we could easily tell that talent only plays an important component part in the very beginning of ones success, and what led to ones ultimate achievement is practice. Both Levities and I believe in the importance of practice. We also hold the same idea that it is more essential than talent in the long run . A man born with talents only means he is lucky and can acquire a special(prenominal) skill more quickly than others.
